BOATING ESSENTIALS WITH A BABY

I (delightedly) married into a boat loving family, but honestly who doesn't love boats? Fun fact - Phil and I met for the first time out on his boat in California, so no one was surprised when Ruby took her first spin around the lake at 8 weeks old. We spent this past weekend with Phil's family and we were out on the water a good portion of our Saturday. Ruby hated her life jacket, loved the wind blowing in her face, devoured hummus, and took her hat off at least 100 times.

Boating is such a great family activity and one that's perfect for all ages. If you're planning on heading out on the water with your little one this spring here are a few key items to bring along for a safe, relaxing and enjoyable experience.

Sun Hat - Sun in your eyes is no fun, especially for a baby. Be sure to grab a sun hat with protection, this one offers UPF 50+ to keep those rays at bay.

Cover Up - After a quick dip in the water a lightweight cover up offers the perfect shield from the sun and will calm those chattering teeth from the breezy air.

Sunscreen - If your little one is 6 months or older you have the green light to lather them up with sunscreen. If your baby is under 6 months old skip the sunscreen and take extra care to keep them out of direct sunlight. Mustela is great brand for babies with sensitive skin.

Life Vest - Obviously the most important item to have when you are out on the water with a baby is a life jacket. Knowing your baby will be safe in case of an emergency gives everyone peace of mind. This one is perfect for little ones who are under 30 pounds.

Swim Diaper - What a wonderful invention. These diapers keep messes under wraps without the bulging and sagging that you would get from a wet standard diaper.

Water - Even the babies need to hydrate! Ruby didn't have water before 6 months but she has quickly become a sippy cup pro. If you haven't yet reached the water milestone, breastmilk/formula will provide all the hydration your water baby needs. Bottoms up!

WHAT TO WEAR ON A DATE

A date is a date. It does not matter if it's the first date, the last date, a much needed date or a thirty years in the making date. Date nights are always the  perfect excuse to get dolled up.

You would be correct in assuming that Phil and I's time alone together has tanked since having Ruby last April. We sometimes manage to squeeze in a dinner out here and there if our parents are in town - but those times are far and few between.

This week we buckled down and started the search for a babysitter. My how times have changed. I was babysitting at the age of eleven and now Phil and I won't even consider someone who isn't CPR certified and comes with a small phonebook of references. Anyway, we seem to have found two that we like - we have phone interviews scheduled with both of them tomorrow. Phone interviews?! If all goes well, we will set up a meet and greet between them and Ruby and keep our fingers crossed that it's a match. It's like online dating for childcare, but hey, if it gets us a reliable, trustworthy babysitter so we can go out every once in awhile I'm game!

Thankfully, I binge shopped for over the top (completely impractical) non-maternity clothing at the end of my pregnancy so I have a closet full of pieces begging to be worn. I love to pick one piece per outfit that really pops and keep the rest of the look relatively simple. By choosing just one "wow" item you are guaranteeing a classic look while still giving off a trendy vibe. It's a foolproof method that everyone should try for their next night out.

Deep breath! Feelings of calmness and serenity have once again entered my life. If you recall last week I mentioned that I had all of my shoes lined up  in the living room, I was in the middle of a seasonal closet swap and was having a mini meltdown as I realized how poorly my dear shoes had been treated. I live in a TINY apartment in the city and storage space is less than limited. Unfortunately my sweet shoes have been residing in a crumbling box at the back corner of a storage nook since July. I opened the box to see that some of my most beloved pairs were getting destroyed from the pressure and awkward positions they had been stored in. I decided right then and there that that was enough, something needed to be done. I immediately hopped online and frantically began googling 100 variations of "shoe storage in limited space."  Images continued to pop up and shoe containers from The Container Store caught my eye. I took a few minutes to browse their site and was blown away by the options available. After a quick trip to the next town over (and surviving a Coke can being thrown at my windshield, Boston drivers are the WORST) I was on my way home with a back seat full of varying shoe containers and a much improved anxiety level.

After hauling 20 classic shoe boxes, 5 boot boxes and 5 men's shoe boxes up four flights of stairs my arms were burning, I was out of breath and excited to start organizing! Each pair of shoes quickly found a home and I was more than thrilled to discover that 2 pair of full size boots fit into 1 boot box, and 3 pair of ankle/combat boots also fit comfortably in a boot box. I purchased the men's shoe boxes with the intent of housing my ultra high stilettos, which worked perfectly as each pair fit like a glove.

With my anxiety level steadily dropping back into a healthy range I began stacking and arranging the boxes on my closet shelves. In what seemed like no time at all every pair of shoes had found a new home free of claustrophobia and over crowding. Thanks to the clear boxes I could see what each container held and the fight to find the pair I was looking for was now over. It's the little things in life, isn't it?

Spring Layering

Spring Layering

As Boston continues to play its treacherous game of temperature roulette getting dressed in the morning has proven to be quite challenging. I leave the house and it is between 25 and 30 degrees, by noon it is hovering around the mid 50's and as I head home the temperature has dipped back into the 30's. With the unpredictable temperature spikes and falls comes the need for layering. Layering gives options and when the temperatures are wavering between winter and spring options are necessary. Spring Layering Options

  • Layering on Top - When it comes to layering, layering pieces on top of one another is probably the first idea that comes to mind. A silky tank, graphic tee or long sleeve chambray shirt are all starter items that can be built on. Warm weather leather is huge this spring and a leather jacket provides a great way to keep warm while still looking bright and airy. Opt for a colored leather or light neutral to execute this look flawlessly. A blazer is my layering item of choice, I love the classic look and instant chicness a blazer brings to an ensemble. Choose colors that reflect your mood and the season and the blazer will become an instant layering staple. A cardigan is a quick, comfortable way to be prepared for whatever temperatures lie ahead. Cardigans are offered in a variety of colors and prints so have fun and play with different trends. Lastly, a scarf can be your make or break piece when dealing with temperamental temperatures. A cotton scarf can be wrapped around your neck for instant warmth in the mornings and can easily be removed and tied in a bow on your purse strap as the temperatures rise throughout the day and the scarf is no longer necessary for warmth but an adorable accessory.
  • Layering Underneath - Layering underneath your starter items is often forgotten about in temperature limbo. The addition of a cotton tank or camisole (as long as they are tucked in) provides a surprising amount of warmth on those windy mornings! The next time you head out the door not knowing what sort of weather will hit you don't forget about layering underneath, it may be your lifesaver.

5 Wardrobe Essentials

5 Wardrobe Essentials

I am a firm believer in playing fair, so much so that I even use that philosophy when it comes to my clothing. True story, when I was about 10 years old I packed every single pair of underwear that owned for a one week vacation because I did not want to hurt any of their feelings by leaving them behind. If my parents didn't know then that fashion would be a major part of my life I don't know what more I needed to do. Although I still treat my clothing as if they have feelings and needs (I currently have all of my shoes lined up on my living room so they can "breathe") I have developed a sense of respect and admiration for a few key pieces that I cannot imagine living without. Every closet needs the 5 wardrobe essentials listed in this post. With their addition you will find it exponentially easier to get ready on an everyday basis.

5 Wardrobe Essentials

  1. Basic Top - A simple, elegant top with enough detail to stand on its own is a crucial piece in any wardrobe. A basic top will always save you in a time crunch. Pair it with a jean, dress pant, short or skirt and you are out the door looking chic and put together. A top like this H&M lace panel tank is an excellent choice, its detail and subdue tone make it the perfect candidate.
  2. Dark Jean - Whether you prefer a skinny, boot cut or wide leg jean make sure you own a solid dark wash denim. This essential item is sleek and forgiving and can be dressed up or down. Pair it with your basic top and sandal for a day of errands and transition into night with the addition of a sexy heel. A perfect fitting, dark wash jean is an investment and should be a piece you allow yourself to splurge on. Designer denim holds its shape and does not fade nearly as fast as a bargain buy. This Hudson jean will stand the test of time and give the idea of booty a lift thanks to Hudson's signature back pockets.
  3. Delicate Necklace - An understated necklace ties together a look the instant the clasp latches. I could not live without my David Yurman Initial Necklace. This necklace is perfect for everyday, its classic style yet delicate size complete every outfit without going over the top or causing me to waste time deciding between 3 or 4 other options. It is always the right choice!
  4. Black & Nude Flat - Black and nude is a favorite color combination of mine, the black provides an all time classic appeal while the nude adds a bit of spunk and style to the overall look. Flats are versatile, comfortable and adorable! Be sure to snag yourself a pointed toe flat in order to elongate and slim your leg. A black and nude flat can be paired with literally anything for sheer perfection. I currently am rocking a black and nude Adrienne Vittadini flat that I got for a steal at Marshall's but would die for this pair of breathtakingly gorgeous Valentino's.
  5. Flirty Dress - A comfortable, fun dress can take my mood from blah to bubbly in a matter of seconds! Owning a dress that tugs at your heart strings will take even the most dreadful of days and turn them around. A dress like this 100% cotton check print dress from Asos takes the anxiety out of getting ready in the morning, no matter the occasion. It is perfect for summer parties, Saturday errands, Sunday morning church, work, birthday parties, girl's night and date night! This dress will look great with sandals, stilettos or suede booties, add a cardigan or a blazer depending on the event and dress it up or down with diamonds and costume jewelry. This style of dress will change the mood of your closet and eliminate the phrase, "I have nothing to wear."

What in your closet could you not live without? Is there anything on this list that you're missing and need in your closet pronto?
